Frequently Asked Questions
How does a spray tan work?
When achieving a spray tan the spray application of sunless tanning solution is applied to desired areas of your body. When applied, DHA (the active ingredient in sunless tanning solution) reacts with the proteins in the skin’s superficial layer to form a brown color. Your skin begins to darken a few hours after application and reaches its peak color within the first 12 hours.
What is DHA?
The active ingredient in most sunless tanning products is the color additive, (DHA) dihydroxyacetone. DHA is a carbohydrate (monosaccharide sugar) compound approved by the FDA for use in externally applied sunless tanning solutions. When applied, dihydroxyacetone reacts with dead cells in the skin's surface to temporarily darken the skin. DHA is often derived from a vegetable source like beets or sugar cane. Its properties as a skin darkener were discovered in the 1920s but weren’t marketed as such until the 1960s, then added to the FDA’s list of approved colors for cosmetic products in the 1970s.
How do I know what DHA percentage I need to achieve the healthy glow I want?
You will have a consult with a trained technician to discuss a multitude of factors to determine which percentage of DHA is right for you. Things we take into consideration are your skin color and if you are able to achieve a tan on your own.
How long does the tan last?
A spray tan typically last between 5 to 7 days. For some, it can last longer! You can even maintain your healthy glow year round with routine sprays. How well you take care of your skin plays a huge role in the duration of how long it will last. Genetics also factor into this. The color achieved from your spray tan will gradually fade through natural exfoliation…just like a sun tan!
Why is a custom spray tan better than a booth?
At Brush of Bronze LLC we have trained technicians educated on how to properly spray tan someone. A booth is not able to recognize all of our different shapes and sizes. Therefore it is more apt to miss creases and crevices of your body. Brush of Bronze also likes to take the time to make sure you are properly prepped for a spray tan as well as ensuring you are placed in the proper positions to reach the entirety of your body. We walk you through your spray tan instead of expecting you to do it on your own! How is that for good customer service?
What sets Brush of Bronze’s solution apart from the rest?
Out chosen solution will not streak you or leave you orange. It is a beautiful natural brown and will be customized to your own unique skin tone. There is a wide range of sunless tanning solutions and some are a step above the rest. We take pride on our spray tan solution because It contains Eco-Certified DHA, derived from natural and organic ingredients, paraben free, and cruelty free.
What does Eco-Certified DHA mean?
Ecocert is an internationally recognized certification that guarantees a high standard practice through formulation and manufacturing of products. Ecocert has been the first to certify and set standards for organic and natural cosmetics. Ecocert is considered to be the most important organization in Europe in setting the criteria in natural and organic cosmetics. Their requirements for an organic product are as follows:
- A minimum of 10% of the ingredients must be certified organic;
- At least 95% of the ingredients must be of vegetable/plant origin;
- While the product may contain a maximum of 5% synthetic ingredients, none of these must be included on the negative list.
Does a spray tan protect me from UV (Ultraviolet) Rays?
No! There is no sun protectant in our spray tan solution. It is very important that if you have intentions of being in the sun you apply sunscreen accordingly. A high SPF is recommended.
Can I get skin cancer from a spray tan?
Absolutely not! Spray tanning is UV FREE. With a spray tan you do not run the risk of getting melanoma, wrinkles, age spots, moles, freckles, or sunspots. This is why we say it is the healthy alternative.
How long does it take to get a spray tan?
It takes roughly 20 minutes from start to finish. Custom spray tanning takes 5 minutes for prepping, 10 minutes for spraying, and 5 minutes to dry and dress.
From start to finish what can I expect during a spray tan?
Upon your arrival you will be shown to a well ventilated and spacious spray room where you have a private dressing room area to undress and prepare for the tan. All articles of clothing may be removed to your comfort level and a shower cap placed on your head. Women you may wear a bathing suit, thong, bandeau top, or go nude. Men must remain in underwear at all times. Brush of Bronze does have disposables for purchase if you prefer not to get sprayed in your own articles. You will be asked to step onto a platform where barrier cream will be placed to the elbows, knees, ankles, palms, and toe/finger nails and sticky feet applied to the soles of each foot. A technician will spray you with a HVLP (High Volume, Low Pressure) spray gun and turbine instructing you in which position to stand so that every crevice and crease may have spray solution applied to it. When the spray is done you will step in front of a fan where you will air dry for three to four minutes before placing your garments back on for departure. The solution is quick drying and non-sticky. The whole experience from start to finish should run roughly fifteen minutes. SEE...It's not so hard getting a gorgeous glow after all!
